Fort Hood was the scene of another shooting today. At present,12 dead and 31 wounded.
When I first heard about this I had the thought that said individuals that did the shooting were Combat vets and having some issues. Not so much now. It seems that the one shooter that was killed(there were three total last report) was an Army Major with a Muslim name. One of the sites that I go to has a facebook page of him listed(I don't do facebook so I wasn't able to see the page) and supposedly all of his friends there are also Muslim.
Coordinated attack. Army Personnel. Muslim. Could this be an infiltration team?
Our media is reporting(via Washington reports) that Al Queda is a defunct group. I am not so sure anymore. A group with the cell setup that they had doesn't just die off. Its going to have cells that operate long after the core group is removed. There doesn't have to be a communications network like we have in our organized military. Cells are given a set of parameters to follow then let go to operate as needed. No follow up. This isn't a military group made up of enlisted people and career officers. This is a group built around an Ideology. One that inspires its followers to eliminate themselves in the cause of it. There isn't a middle ground with these people. Its do or die and sometimes, more than frequently, Do and Die. They aren't worried "about getting home" because they firmly believe that in dying for the cause they are going to heaven with honors.
Fanatical is only the tip of the iceberg with these mentalities.
I worry thought that the administration, the DHS and the NSA are going to spin this against the troops we currently have. Restricting them even further. The same rules apply here that the Bradyites have been using for years. Restrict access to arms and "problem solved".
Wrong answer.
I bet when it comes down to it the weapons used at Fort Hood will be found to be 1) untraceable or 2) stolen weapons that were purchased off the street(or in Mexico). Even if they are found to be legally obtained, the situation won't be any different. There isn't anyway of knowing if someone buying a handgun/rifle/shotgun is going to use it in an illegal manner. NO WAY TO KNOW. You can understandably restrict those that have broken laws before but it won't stop a determined individual from obtaining a weapon. From my standpoint it seems that its much easier to obtain a weapon illegally than through the legal hoops. The Laws only restrict the law abiding, not the law breaking. Like my dad says," Locks only keep honest people, honest. They won't stop a thief." Same analogy applies here.
These guys attacked soldiers of the United States on Federal Land. Motives are unknown at this point but I would like to think that the Base General is ballsy enough to waterboard the two shooters and get ALL of the information about what really went down. Obama may not like the way things get done but I think in this case the Military needs to step up. Our weaselly president needs to let them do what they need to do so that we can put a stop to this crap, once and for all.
Addendum: Shooter is not dead, in custody in a hospital. Is a Muslim, and a U.S. citizen. Seems this guy was something of a loose cannon that was gaining the attention of the FBI. Messy situation for all at this point. This is another situation that I will be watching. I doubt that this administration can spin it up to justify further encroachment on our rights: I wouldn't put if past them though.

And now for something completely different.
A few years back I was checking out 'cheap living' alternatives and ran across some obscure post for making quick and cheap meals. (I would link it but that particular server seems offline now. My shortcut doesn't work)
To wit, very simply this is simple but healthy foods that require you to not have much desire for gourmet tastes. Simply Rice, wheat, barley, oats what have you.
It requires a Thermos hot water and patience. LOL something that I am usually short on. I made some Oats last night before heading to bed and this morning they were done perfectly. Tonight I am trying my hand at some rice. I am going a little bit further with it as I added a tablespoon of Lemon juice and some cilantro (Ala Chipotle style) and I am going to cook up some meats to go with it.
Really simple and something that can be purchased fairly cheaply. I picked up a back of whole oats (10lb bag) for $4.50. With proper storage this will probably keep me fed for a year ( with the other items) 2/3cup dry stuff makes a full 3 cups of wet. thats three meals if I am not picky about an expansive diet. And its full of good carbs, Fiber and vitamins. No chemicals that I am aware of that I didn't add in(salt being the only thing). Pretty good texture and damned good flavor (unlike the stuff I had been eating that was so processed I couldn't taste the oats, only the 'flavoring') I am going to run with this for a week and see how I feel. I know I need to start eating better; living alone has really dampened my urge to cook properly. That and having little to no counter space but thats another story all together. The downside of living in an Efficiency.
Ok My rambling is over. Back to the grind.

An argument AGAINST universal Healthcare.
I recieved the call last night around 2 A.M.
" This had better be good." (me)
" How about I am vomiting blood,, Good enough?" (daughter)
" On my way" (me) Click.
I get there, little argument about going to the E.R. but she concedes and leaves, leaving me to sit the Dog and Granbehbie.
She doesn't have insurance so she went the University Hospital E.R. here locally.
Bill out the door. $0 $8 parking.
They couldn't find anything though. Granted she has ulcers and I personally think one flared up on her but I am not a doctor. Still for not being insured, she was covered.
And The FEDGOV wants to take over even more control of a system that really needs to be less controlled. I have heard the arguments of lower costs, but that fails when you show that the reason the costs are so high is because of Federal mandates on services. The reason there are drugs available overseas for Cancer that aren't available here is because of Federal Mandate( the FDA specifically) There are more arguments that can go around but the fact is, THE SYSTEM WORKS even with all of the crap that they throw at it. NOW they are trying to take the private sector out of the equation all together(and they will see a sharp decline in Doctors in the process) leaving people like my daughter, my dad, heck, myself; Screwed.
They say that everyone has a line in the sand. This one is mine. A couple of reasons for that. There is a stipulation in the bill for an ID system. This isn't the National ID that has been proposed in the past but its so close as to be its twin. There are many aspects of that, that leave me speechless. The most important being the image of SS asking "Papers, please" in the old war films. Not really keen on that becoming possible here(though we really aren't that far from it with our Drivers License's) The other is the proposal that they can find me 'unfit' for gun ownership through a board of "elected officials". These people won't be doctors and WILL work for the Government. Think they won't have a bias against people that are opinionated AND armed?
There are other proposals coming down the pike like Cap and Trade, Illegal immigrant Amnesty, and the Value Added Tax. Every single one of these proposals cedes a little more state power to the FedGov. Each one opens up even more loopholes allowing more trepidations on "We the People". Each one also calls for more taxes from those that actually pay taxes, to be distributed to those 'in need'. Not sure about where you live but here where I live, those in need aren't seeing it and the ones that are haven't a clue how to use it properly. I don't know how many times a week a see some welfare case buying junk food at the convenience store on the food stamp program card. I don't know how many of them have video consoles in their houses but I know of more than a few that have Video consoles in their SUV's.(gas guzzling monsters with High dollar rims. And these people are on WELFARE????)
I guess I am trying to alliterate that there is a growing rift in this country.(like this isn't touched upon daily by the Conservative broadcasters) The rift isn't about the Have's and Have-not's anymore. Its about the Producers and the Users. Go ahead progressives: Tax the hell out of the Producers. If they have the means they will leave for better climes elsewhere in the world(like most of our manufacturing has already) If not, they will give up eventually and either go Galt, or go on the dole. I am already making my plans to go Galt. I can't swallow my pride enough to 'give up'.
No matter what, if the Progressives continue making headway, there will be trouble in this country. When and where, I haven't a clue. Sadly though its not a question of "IF" anymore. They will cross a line and someone will be there to push back. When that happens things will escalate VERY quickly.
OK I am done ranting for the night. GO VOTE TOMORROW if there are elections in your state.

News
Phone interview today. Hope to hear something a little more solid soon.
Could use something steady for once. Some say the economy is growing, I think its illusory numbers generated by Economists trying to keep the 'good feelings' afloat nationwide. People know we are in trouble but in denial. The numbers can't be denied when you really look at the big picture. Anyone with experience balancing a checkbook should know that we are bleeding cash faster than we are generating it. Its hard to generate anything when 90% of our economy is based on service industries and not manufacturing. Even 'Intelligent Properties' like Programs, Operating systems, etc are enough IF we have enough of them. Biggest problem is we outsourced so many of these things in the last 10 years we would have a hard time bringing them back to our shores.
Back to the original point of this post. Job hunt. Have been sending out 3-4 resumes a day for the last 4 months and today is only the second call I have received. Least to say I am not holding my breath on this one but it did give me hope. I like being a carpenter but the work really isn't steady enough to count on. One of the points of trying to move and build is to become self sufficient. I have enough skills to manufacture items given a workshop and enough internet savvy to generate a small income from that. I would have the property to raise a garden, areas for hunting in the right season, and family around to keep me company. If I could get my daughter to face reality and move with me I could also help raise the Granbehbie and educate her the way the schools aren't.(she would be the Tomboy, truckdriving wrench wielding, gunshooting envy of all the boys. Just gotta get by Grandpa and Mom. LOL)
Maybe I am pipe dreaming here. Its enough to help me hold out a little longer in a town I despise though. I know My chances of getting ahead are here first and foremost, FOR NOW. Once I hit a point though I will be making that move faster than you can scare a cat. I only fear getting caught in this town when things start getting rough. Getting out could be hairy at that point.

An Exercise in Futility.
Arguing with Liberals is like herding cats, counting sandgrains, or teaching pigs to sing. Frustrating is only the icing on that cake.
I am refering to a fisk that I did today on IrateNation. 'Liberal and Proud of it" went off the handle again last night and I spent half of the day while working thinking about it. When I came home I ripped into his post and while not scathing I did get a little hostile by my standards. I really shouldn't let stupidity get to me the way it does. Maybe its the fact that I see so many that are so willing to give their lives to the Nanny State without a whimper. So many potentially good people being swallowed up in this mess and not one TRIED to make it on their own principles.
I see the stories of Ayn Rand coming to life in front of my eyes. While we aren't so bad as George Orwell predicted I think that is more a matter of self-preventing prophecy. Tell it so horrible that no one wants to even toe that pathway. Still in many ways we aren't that far from that future if people continue ignoring the basic Premises of Freedom and Liberty. I expand upon these things as much as possible to as many will give me an ear(to the point of my daughter being sick of hearing it some days.)(though she has made poppa proud by quoting me on occasion :-D) To say the least, in a liberal town, I have few friends. No regrets about it as I don't need friends like that when the SHTF. Far too many are going to be clamoring for escape from the mess they voted for. Elections have consequences as they say. We are starting to see the cumulative effects of several elections coming to fruition.
Work seems to be coming back on line some, will know more here in the next day or two. If Not then I will be searching starting monday which means fewer posts unless I get a Support position where I will be online. Haven't been to many of those posting though, will see.
Addendum: Seems I am not the only one. http://www.thepriceofliberty.org/09/10/26/commentary.html

Laying low. watching the cash flow (away)
Not really that bad this week but I am buying a rifle that is a bit pricey for me so I am laying low to stretch the cash out some. I had planned on doing work on the truck this weekend but the rain has pretty much dashed those plans onto the rocks. I still need to finish getting the axles pulled off the old one and I have a feeling that I am going to be taking a day off this week to make that happen. The winter weather is coming on fast this year. I don't want to get caught in the snow with slipping axles.
Been doing research into the Dragunov styled rifles the last couple of days. Watched a Youtube of a guy shooting one and have to say that I am impressed at how much recoil is absorbed by the cycle spring on this type or rifle; very little muzzle climb in comparison to the Mosin Nagant. No takers yet on the Mosin Nagant either. I may end up having to sell it at a store or take it to a gun show and take a loss on it. I have thought of keeping it but I just can't get around 'not needing three rifles'. I won't give up the SKS since she is just too utilitarian for the environment I live in. I don't really need the Dragunov either but I do want a competition rifle and the SKS just won't reach out to the distances I need for that and the Mosin is limited by the magazine and bolt along with hardware that I can install on her. The only upside of the Mosin is heavier bullets. The Dragunov doesn't like the heavier grained bullets in the soft point class(that I would want to use for animals like deer or larger). I started looking into reloading so that I can get the bullets I want for this rifle. If I start that I will seriously consider going down to one rifle. Till then the SKS stays and I have my hollow points for hunting with that. I don't ever see me shooting anything past 150 yards while in the Appalachians though. Too much cover so no need for the 'big guns' like a dragunov. Now if I move out west or to Texas; well, we will have to see. I would like to get the Dragunov out in the desert to stretch out and see what I could do with it. LOL I am such a shooter geek.
On the Political Front I am going to keep my thoughts to myself for a bit. Too many things have happened, been said, contradicted, etc, etc, for me to be comfortable with the directions we are headed. To wit, I have a friend that is in the same boat and has offered a direction to head if things get really funky. Its greatly appreciated too.

Flustered with ignorance.
The last couple of days have been interesting to me and frustrating as well. On Irate Nation there is a new member that is a liberal(I think that he is on the wrong forum but I am willing to debate subjects so no biggie). What is frustrating is the lack of resolve from Liberals. They harp so loudly about the abuses and 'fairness' but when someone confronts them with facts, they flee. Its exasperating to me.
That wasn't what this post is about though it definitely set the stage for what happened today. I was at work and our plumbers were on site working out details of a particular project that they are working on. Somehow (like the pistol butt sticking out of my waistband) the subject turned to rights, the law, and history(all rolled up into one the way I like them). Sadly though I found myself confronted by a racial bias (on their part, and I can't say its all wrong though they wouldn't hear my side of the coin) that just left me holding the bag as they walked away. Apparently they feel that for every law on the books there is one for the whites and one for the blacks. How do you approach this without looking like a fool or alienating the other party? By their logic they feel justified in the whole 'racial profiling' argument. And without actually having the time to use facts, I was left standing there trying get an answer to a question about WHY they think that way.
I know that IF they would take the time to learn more about how things really work instead of just assuming that what they have been taught is the gospel of truth, they would not be so quick to condemn. But then that's really the issue isn't it: Education? Or lack of proper education more like. At one point in my life I wanted to teach; circumstances dictated that I take a different route but even to this day I find I still want to teach. BUT, there isn't anyway I would be able to teach in our societal institutions with the discipline restrictions the way they are. I wouldn't tolerate the outbursts from today's kids the way the teachers have to now. Some young punk would get the paddle and I would be in jail for assault if some kid mouthed off to me the way I hear them mouthing off now. (In my days in school we would have taken home a sore ass only to get even more from the parents.)
This country is on the ropes with the way the liberals have made it with all of the little regulations and controls they have put in place. The Conservatives are equally at fault for falling asleep at the helm. There is so much that needs to be done to fix the issues at hand that I get flustered thinking about it. We need to fix the government by reducing its size and influence. We need to fix the economy by doing away with the Federal Reserve. We need to fix the education system by getting the Government out of the schools and allowing the teachers the flexibility to discipline again.(and make it so that the schools are in competition by showing RESULTS!) We need to be AWARE again and not let things slip so badly.
I see signs of hope. Saturday's showing in D.C. really gave me hope(probably why I opened up to the conversation today) but there is still A LOT of work to be done and even now things still look bleak. I worry that we are on the verge of a third revolution in this country and this time it will break us. The divide between the Conservatives and the Progressives is pretty substantial(I hate using monkeyspheres here but thats the only way to really show how rough things are.) I am not sure that we are going to be able to hold the center with the what I see coming. And there are many that other countries that would be more than willing to see us fall(and may help the process anyway they can.)
Time will tell.
I just worry what the future holds for my Kid and my Granbehbie. My time left is short enough that I don't fight for me but for them. I only hope that its not too late.
Then I turn around and see this and have to laugh.
Most days I am envious of his bliss. But I think about it and am glad that I am not a 'pet' to someone or something.

We need to be AWARE again and not let things slip so badly.

Crazy weekend ahead.
Much going on this weekend. The 912 project and many other grassroots organizations are marching on D.C. this weekend. Sadly I am unable to attend this event though my spirit soars when I think of the number of conservatives going there to shout at the devil this weekend. I fear though that following this event, the PTB are going to ramp up the agenda push. This is like a shot in the dark for them to let them REALLY know that we are mad as hell and come next year there will be a culling of those up for re-election. They haven't much time to play their cards without receiving much resistance.
On the home front I am moving the donor vehicle to a closer location so that I can really dig into the repairs that I need to make on my truck. If my foreboding is correct I am going to need a VERY reliable vehicle that is capable of off road use. Currently I am not able to use the 4X4 on this truck due to mismatched axles. One thing I really do not like about were I live is a decent work site for automotive repairs. One thing I do miss about living out west was the Repair bays for rent. If I were a little better off Financially I would look into investing in something like that here. With the economy tanking around here there is a demand for such places. As it is though most of what I am bringing home now goes to invest in building my 'compound'. LOL Like its going to be that but its fun to think of. Still there will be more workshop on site there than actual home. I am such a tinkerer that I have to keep my shops seperate from my living space or I never get any sleep. I tend to push through projects to completion at the cost of eat and sleep. My one quirk that shows my obsessive compulsive disorder.(Tesla and Edison were the same way I hear. )
No range trip this weekend due to a full schedule. I will be showing my face at the local meetup for the 912/Beck show tomorrow. After that it will be stripping as many useful parts off the donor in preparation of actual repair. I still need to manage getting to see Granbehbie and Daughter at some point. Granbehbie has a new word too. Heard her saying it on the phone tonight. "uh-oh" Too cute too. She is totally showing her mother who really is in charge over there too. LOL.

Feeling the Itch
It has been 3 weeks since I was last at the range.
I am REALLY feeling the itch. I have been trying to be good since it cost's so much for the trip out there and the cost of the ammo. I guess I have been pretty good but man with the new parts in the rifles, a new mouse gun that I want to try out, I really want to go shoot holes in stuff. I still need to double check my work on the scope I mounted on the Mosey. Since then the trigger spring came in (talk about a smooth trigger now woof!), and the hammer spring came in for the SKS so I shouldn't have anymore lite strikes.(been thinking that I need to stop puttering with the trigger assembly and just enjoy the rifle for what it is. Cheap Milsurp and reliable.)
I think I may have to bite the bullet and just go this weekend. Probably on sunday as they are calling for rain on Saturday. Will see. (then again rain has never stopped me if they won't close the range for it. lol)

Something a little different to post today.
Been light posting lately since things are starting to gear up for the winter months around here. Winter in Cincinnati is a strange breed. Sometimes things actually look like winter but for only a week at a time. Those that talk about global warming probably grew up here. LOL The only bad winter I can really remember was in '76 and I remember the snow drift that buried the front of my Dad's house. Other than that we tend to get hammered once or twice and the rest of the time its either trying to make up its mind or leaning towards summer.
I picked up a Chevy Tahoe for a parts car to repair my truck this past weekend. That has been taking up a lot of my time. I didn't 'Need' the repairs that I have been doing but 'parts is parts' right? So I took the powered seats out of the beast and installed them along with the center console in my truck. I am in the process right now of swapping the doors out. Mine are rather beat up and the hinge pins are worn out. I did purchase the new pins but the new doors actually have power windows that I have rigged to a bank of switches in the center console. I finished the Passenger door today before it started getting dark. Tomorrow is more of the same for me since we aren't working on any houses tomorrow.
The biggest reason I wanted the Tahoe is for the Differentials. The Guy I purchased the truck from swapped out the rear Axle and didn't match it to the front one. Because of that I have not been able to engage the 4X4 aspect of the truck. With winter coming up I really want that functional. Trucks aren't the greatest handling beasts in snow or slush and having all 4 tires under power can only help. As it stands though, this little truck impresses the shit out of me at least once a week. When I brought the Tahoe home the little V6 in her just purred away all the way to the drop sight. This engine has over 200 thousand miles on her and she still runs like a champ.
I only spent $500 for the original truck. The Tahoe was Free for the taking and other than my own time in the work I probably have only dropped $200 in parts since March. I am getting about 22MPG average. Why would I want to drop this truck for a new car with outrageous insurance premiums and about the same performance factor. I am recycling at its most root core and the Liberals that would whine about a hulk of a truck can kiss my country butt on this note. I like my truck.
On the Family side, the Granbehbie is learning to sing. LOL Loudly, off key, and unintelligibly, but she is really getting into it. She hasn't mastered the walk thing yet but she is getting there.
That was the good news, Bad news is my brother-in-law has new tumors in his femur now. They took him off the harder Chemo this week and are trying a lighter chemo more frequently. They are also trying Localized radiation for the newer tumors. All of this was discovered on Tuesday so time will tell how all of this pans out. If you are so inclined please put in a prayer for him and my Sister.
